$25 MILLION FOR MOBILE BLACK SPOT INVESTMENT IN REGIONAL NSW
Member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser, today welcomed the $25 million contribution from the NSW Government towards the Commonwealth’s $100m Mobile Black Spot Programme.
Mr Fraser said the State Government is partnering with the Commonwealth and telecommunication carriers to invest tens of millions of dollars into mobile communication infrastructure in regional NSW to help families, businesses and emergency services connect.
“The NSW Government is delivering more reliable services for regional communities to improve network infrastructure,” Mr Fraser said
“We are providing high quality mobile voice and wireless broadband services to enable our public safety agencies and regional communities to better communicate with one another. In the election we promised regional NSW would not have to worry about the stress and hassle associated with mobile black spots, which are costly and inefficient.
“Under the agreement the NSW Government will work closely with the Commonwealth Government and telecommunication carriers to ensure regional communities enjoy better mobile phone access,” Mr Fraser added.
Minister for Regional Development John Barilaro said the program will improve coverage along major transport routes, in small communities and in locations prone to experiencing natural disasters, as well as addressing unique mobile coverage problems.
“We have allocated $25 million over four years to eliminate some of the state’s worst mobile phone black spots,” Mr Barilaro said.
“The NSW Liberals & Nationals are listening to our regional communities and delivering the programs and services that make a real difference – that is what our communities expect.
“We are determined to support the delivery of as many new mobile base stations in NSW as possible and have structured our contribution to target more than 130 new sites and extend coverage to more than 20,000 properties,” he said.
The Commonwealth has committed $100 million (GST exclusive) over four years to the delivery of the Mobile Black Spot Programme and is expected to announce the successful funding recipients and locations in June 2015.
