In recognition of International Day Of People With Disability, the NSW Government has announced Jobs for people with disability: A plan for the NSW public sector.
Member for Coffs Harbour Andrew Fraser welcomed the 10 year plan that aims to double the number of people with disability working in the public sector from 2.7 per cent to 5.6 per cent by 2027.
Mr Fraser said the NSW Government is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workforce.
“Equal employment opportunities has always been a key priority for the NSW Government,” Mr Fraser said.
“There are a number of ways the public sector can embrace the plan, such as delivering more internships and graduate roles for people with disability, and ensuring accessibility is front of mind in the design and fit out of new or refurbished workplaces.”
Minister for Disability Services, Ray Williams, said the NSW Government is focused on building a stronger economy with more jobs for the people of NSW, including people with disability.
“There are significantly fewer people with disability working in the public sector than in the private sector. That’s why the NSW Government is taking action to promote diversity and inclusion in the workforce to reflect the society we represent,” Mr Williams said.
To achieve the Government’s target, the plan establishes four priority action areas:
Improve attraction and recruitment of people with disability
Create more inclusive and accessible workplaces to reduce the exit rate of employees with disability
Support career development and progression for employees with disability
Better understand performance and the needs of employees with disability by collecting more robust data.
The Department of Family and Community Services and the NSW Public Service Commission partnered to develop the sector-wide plan.
